Principal Connor's Weekly ENotes

Principal Connor's Weekly ENotes
Posted on 09/22/2018
Dear Families,

If you haven't heard, we had a 1 hour power outage at school today due to a malfunctioning transformer in the neighborhood.  Students and staff remained in classrooms until the power returned.  We then went about our day.  The students and staff did a great job adapting to the situation. This is especially true since the clouds at the time made for some dark rooms and even darker hallways. It made me think of the old days of schooling in the one room schoolhouse: no electricity, no computers, etc. These days we are extremely dependent on electricity and going without it for an hour, while not impossible, was challenging. At Bird Middle School, we always want our students to rise to the challenge whether it's in Art, ELA, Science, Technology, PE, etc., or during a power outage. And, today, they did that.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Conferences will be held on October 18 & 25, 6–8:30 pm and October 26, 12:15 - 2:30 pm.  In order to accommodate everyone, conferences will be held in the Gymnasium, Media Center, and Tech Room. Teachers will be seated throughout these three rooms, and parents are invited to wait in line to meet with each teacher individually. You will not need a specific appointment time, but we do ask you to sign up for a specific date so teachers can be prepared with relevant materials. Individual teacher conferences do not exceed five minutes in length. If you have specific concerns that require further discussion, subsequent meetings should be arranged directly with the individual teacher(s). We are using SignUpGenius to schedule your conference date. Simply CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP!

ALICE Training Information for Parents

As one element of our focus on school safety, Walpole Public Schools has partnered with the Walpole Police Department to provide training for all staff and students in ALICE procedures. ALICE is the acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Training has started with an online course for all staff members and will be followed up by in person training for our staff at each school by members of the Walpole Police Department. The administrators and Walpole police officers are also collaborating to provide age appropriate training for our students. We will continue to inform parents regarding updates to this training and other elements of school safety.
